Trusting God in Times of Uncertainty – 2 Chronicles 20:1-30

Have you ever faced a moment so overwhelming that you had no idea what to do? Maybe it was a crisis at home, a difficult diagnosis, a financial struggle, or an unexpected betrayal. In those moments, what did you feel? Alarm? Fear? Anxiety? Confusion? Sometimes these kind of feelings can make it tempting to look for quick fixes—turning to people, plans, or even distractions instead of turning to God.
But in 2 Chronicles 20:1-30, we see a powerful example of what it looks like to turn to God first. When King Jehoshaphat learned that a vast army was coming against Judah, he was alarmed, and rightly so! A vast army was on its way to wage war against his nation. Obviously, he saw the severity of it, this circumstance had potential to turn into nothing less than defeat and total destruction. But, despite his fear, he was resolved to inquire of the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:3).
What Does It Mean to Be Resolved?
Jehoshaphat wasn’t just casually asking God for advice—he was determined. Resolved means being firmly determined to do something, bent on, set on, insistent on, committed to the idea of, whatever that something is. He was resolved to go to the Lord. He made a firm decision to seek God first and led the entire nation to do the same.
“The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.” – 2 Chronicles 20:4
God saw their faith. He saw their humility. And He responded with power!
Where Are You Looking for Help?
Now look at this from God’s perspective. He is looking down from Heaven watching this; listening and hearing everything being said and His heart is moved. They humbly came before him in total surrender and said: “we have this problem, we don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
Throughout history, kings of Israel and Judah often turned to neighboring nations for support—Egypt, Assyria, Babylon. But those alliances always led to trouble. Why? Because God desires that we seek Him first. He alone knows the whole picture, every detail, every motive, and every outcome. He alone is all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfectly just.
When Judah fixed their eyes on God, He fought the battle for them. They didn’t have to lift a single sword! God Himself defeated their enemies, proving once again that when we trust Him fully, He is faithful to provide and protect.
What About Us?
When we’re facing challenges, where do we turn first? Do we immediately seek advice from others, rely on our own strength, or try to figure things out on our own? While wisdom from others can be valuable, our first step should always be to seek God—just as Jehoshaphat did.
How Can We Keep Our Eyes on God?
- Pray first. Before seeking answers elsewhere, lay your worries before the Lord.
- Stay in His Word. Scripture reminds us of His power, promises, and presence.
- Wait on His direction. Trust that He will guide your steps in His perfect timing.
- Surrender control. Instead of trying to “fix” things, leave it in God’s hands.
- Worship through the battle. Jehoshaphat and his people praised God before the victory came. Let praise be your weapon, too!
A Prayer for Trusting God
“Heavenly Father, when life feels overwhelming and I don’t know what to do, help me to fix my eyes on You. Remind me that You see the whole picture, that You are sovereign, and that Your ways are perfect. Give me the faith to trust You completely and the courage to wait on Your direction. You are my refuge, my strength, and my deliverer. I surrender this battle into Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Just like Judah, we may not always see the way forward, but we can confidently say:
“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.” – 2 Chronicles 20:12
