He Knows Me… and Still Loves Me

I heart heaven

When Jesus Keeps His Distance

There’s a small moment in the Gospels that quietly humbles me every time I read it. It doesn’t involve a miracle, a healing, or a parable—but a simple statement about the heart of Jesus:

“But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.” – John 2:24–25

It sounds so… human. So guarded. So unlike the open-armed Jesus we’re used to seeing.
And yet, this passage reveals something profoundly beautiful and sobering:

Jesus doesn’t entrust Himself to everyone.

Surface-Level Faith Isn’t Enough

At this point in the Gospel of John, Jesus had just performed miracles during Passover. Crowds were impressed. People “believed in Him” because of the signs. But Jesus saw through it.

They believed in the miracles, not the Messiah.
They were drawn to the excitement, but not ready to carry a cross.

And so, the Word tells us plainly:

He did not entrust Himself to them.

That word “entrust” in Greek is the same word for “believe” or “have faith in.”
Isn’t that something?
The people believed in Him, but He did not believe in them.

Because He knew.

He knew what was truly in their hearts.
He saw the selfish motives, the shallow curiosity, the craving for spectacle.
He wasn’t fooled, flattered, or persuaded by popularity.

He Knows What’s in Me

That part stops me in my tracks:

He knew what was in each person.

He knows what’s in me.

All the unseen things.
The motives I don’t even fully understand.
The doubts I hide. The pride I try to cover.
The desire to look “godly” instead of actually surrendering.
The fear that maybe I’ll never measure up.
The need to control. The reluctance to trust.

And yet… He stays.

This is what undoes me every time:
Jesus sees everything in me that others don’t—and still doesn’t walk away.
He doesn’t entrust Himself to crowds, but He draws near to the humble.
He holds back from the pretender, but reveals Himself to the seeker.

What Does This Mean for You and Me?

This passage is not just about them.
It’s about us—me and you, right here.

Jesus is not impressed with outward shows of religion.
He’s not drawn to hype, titles, or performance.
He’s looking for surrendered hearts—hearts that say:

  • “You can have all of me, Lord. Even the messy parts.”
  • “Search me and know me.”
  • “I don’t just want Your blessings—I want You.”

Because when He finds that kind of heart, He entrusts Himself to it.
He shares His presence. His secrets. His love. His mission.

“The Lord confides in those who fear Him…” – Psalm 25:14
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” – James 4:8

What Jesus Wants

He’s not looking for perfection—He’s looking for honesty.
He’s not waiting for you to “get it all together”—He’s waiting for you to open up.

If you’ve been wondering why you feel distant from Jesus lately, maybe this is the question to ask:

“Have I truly entrusted myself to Him… or have I just been standing near Him?”

When you entrust yourself fully to Jesus, He does the same.
And it’s the most beautiful, intimate, life-giving relationship you’ll ever know.

A Closing Prayer

Lord, You know me. You see what’s hidden beneath the surface.
You know the parts of me I don’t even understand.
Forgive me for the times I’ve chased You for what You could do for me, rather than for who You are.
I don’t want to perform—I want to be real with You.
Help me to entrust myself fully to You, holding nothing back.
Because I know that when I do, You will entrust Yourself to me in return.
And there’s nothing on earth I want more than You.
Amen.
