Create a Scripture Memory & Journaling Routine

Behind the Scenes:

“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” — Psalm 119:11

Have you ever struggled to remember scripture? Maybe you’ve read a verse that deeply touched your heart, but days later, you struggled to recall it when you needed it most. If so, you’re not alone! Memorizing and meditating on God’s Word is one of the most powerful ways to grow in faith and live in His light, but it takes intentional effort.

Today, I want to take you behind the scenes into my scripture memorization and journaling time—how I set it up, what I use, and how you can create a routine that works for you.

Why Memorizing Scripture Matters

In a world filled with distractions, it’s easy to let scripture reading become something we check off a list. But God’s Word is meant to be hidden in our hearts (Psalm 119:11), guiding us, strengthening us, and shaping our thoughts. When life gets hard, having scripture stored in your heart can be a lifeline—a reminder of God’s promises and a shield against fear, anxiety, and doubt.

Just think of Jesus when He was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). He didn’t argue or panic—He responded with scripture. That’s the power of knowing God’s Word by heart!

Setting Up Your Scripture Memorization & Journaling Space

One of the best ways to stay consistent with scripture memorization is to have a dedicated space for it. It doesn’t have to be fancy—a quiet corner, a comfy chair, or even a section of your kitchen table can work.

Here’s how you can set up your own scripture memorization space:

  • 📖 Choose Your Bible & Journaling Tools – Pick a Bible translation you love and a journal or notebook dedicated to scripture memory. You can also use scripture cards, sticky notes, or a Bible app.
  • 🕯️ Create a Peaceful Atmosphere – Light a candle, play soft worship music, or make a cup of tea. Setting the tone can make your quiet time feel even more special.
  • ✍️ Use a Dedicated Journal – Write out verses daily, reflect on what they mean, and jot down prayers related to those scriptures.
  • 🎨 Make It Visual – Some people love Bible journaling with drawings, stickers, or hand-lettered verses. If that helps you remember scripture, go for it!
  • 📌 Use Scripture Cards – Write verses on index cards and place them around your house (bathroom mirror, car, kitchen sink) so you see them often.
  • 📱 Go Digital If Needed – Use apps like YouVersion or Verses to practice scripture memorization on the go.

Practical Ways to Memorize Scripture

Here are a few simple ways to make memorizing scripture a natural part of your life:

  • Read It Out Loud – Speaking the verse helps it stick in your mind.
  • Write It Repeatedly – Writing scripture multiple times reinforces it in your memory.
  • Turn It into a Prayer – Personalize the verse and pray it over your life.
  • Use It in Daily Conversations – Find ways to apply and speak scripture in your everyday life.
  • Sing It! – There are so many scripture-based worship songs that make memorization easy.
  • Teach It to Someone Else – Sharing what you’re learning helps reinforce it.
