The Love That Chose Us First
Before there were flowers, before there were hearts drawn on cards, before anyone ever whispered the words “I love you,” there was God.
And His love was already moving.
In the very beginning, when the world was still fresh with light and possibility, God created humanity not out of need, but out of desire — the desire to share Himself. He formed them carefully, breathed life into them, and walked with them in the cool of the day. It was never meant to be distant. It was meant to be close. Personal. A relationship, not a ritual.
This was the first love story.
But like so many love stories, it was wounded.
Humanity turned away. Trust was broken. The closeness God designed was replaced by hiding, shame, and silence. Yet God did not walk away. He did not say, “They chose differently; let them go.”
Instead, He began writing a rescue.
Across centuries, through promises whispered to Abraham, through laws given to guide, through prophets who spoke of hope, God kept reaching. Every covenant was like another love letter. Every act of mercy was a reminder:
I have not given up on you.
Even when His people wandered, He stayed faithful. Even when they forgot Him, He remembered them. His love was not fragile. It was steadfast — the kind that stays, the kind that pursues.
Then, in the quiet of a Bethlehem night, Love itself entered the world.
Not as a conqueror.
Not as a king demanding loyalty.
But as a child.
God came near — closer than ever before. He lived among the very people who had turned from Him. He laughed with them, walked their roads, wept their tears. And when they did not recognize Him, when they rejected Him, when they nailed Him to a cross…
He loved them still.
Because this was never a love based on how well we loved Him back.
It was a love that chose us first.
“We love because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19
The cross was not the end of the story.
It was the greatest declaration of love the world has ever known.
Not roses.
Not poetry.
But sacrifice.
Jesus gave Himself completely so nothing — not sin, not failure, not death — could separate us from God’s heart again. And when He rose, it was as if heaven itself said:
This love cannot be overcome.
Now the story continues — not just in Scripture, but in us.
Every time we turn to Him in prayer, we answer His invitation.
Every time we trust Him in weakness, we return His love.
Every act of obedience, every quiet moment of faith, every whispered “Lord, I need You”… is part of this ongoing love story.
We are not just readers of it.
We are participants.
God is still pursuing hearts.
Still restoring.
Still drawing near.
And one day, this love story will reach its beautiful completion — when we stand with Him face to face, no distance left, no sorrow remaining, only the joy of being fully known and fully loved forever.
This Valentine’s Day, remember:
You are not loved because you are perfect.
You are loved because He is.
And the greatest love story ever told…
is the one God is writing with you. 💛
