🌿 Introduction

We often hear the phrase “Put God first,” but what does that actually look like in everyday life?

Is it about reading your Bible every day? Going to church regularly? Saying the right prayers?

Those are good things — but putting God first goes deeper than a checklist. It’s about the position of your heart, not just the pattern of your habits.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said:

“Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

This means God desires the first place in your life — not in theory, but in practice. So let’s talk about what it really looks like to give God that kind of place — not just in the big moments, but in the quiet, daily ones, too.

1. đź’¬ Intentional Time with God

You don’t grow close to someone you never spend time with. Your relationship with God is no different.

Putting Him first means choosing to meet with Him — not just in church or crisis, but in the mundane.

  • Greet Him first thing in the morning: “Good morning, Lord.”
  • Sit with Him over Scripture, even if it’s just one verse.
  • Talk to Him like a friend, and make space to listen too.

This is about presence, not performance.

2. 🏠 Making God the Center of Your Life

It’s easy to tuck God into Sunday mornings or quiet time moments. But what if you let Him into every room of your life?

Area of LifeExample of Putting God First
RelationshipsSeeking wisdom before reacting or judging
TimeLetting go of overcommitment to make space for rest
MoneyHonoring Him through tithing and generosity
Work/CallingAsking: “How can I serve here with integrity?”
EmotionsBringing your fear, joy, or anger straight to Him

God’s not asking you to be perfect. He’s asking to be invited.

3. ✨ Obedience Even When It’s Not Easy

Love and obedience go hand-in-hand. That doesn’t mean legalism — it means surrender.

Jesus said:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15

Putting God first means we obey even when it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, or misunderstood.

Sometimes that looks like forgiveness. Sometimes it means staying silent when you want to defend yourself. Or stepping out when it feels scary.

4. 🌧️ Trusting Him With the Unknown

We all want control. But when we put God first, we lay that control down and say:

“Lord, I trust You more than I trust my plans.”

Even when you can’t see what’s ahead, He can. And choosing to lean into that truth is one of the deepest ways to honor Him.

5. 🤍 Living in Love, Not Legalism

This is a relationship — not a ritual.

God’s not waiting with a clipboard. He’s waiting with open arms.

Putting Him first means loving Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30) — not out of pressure, but because you know that He first loved you.

🪞Reflection Questions

Here are some journal prompts to help you reflect and draw closer:

  • In what areas of life am I unintentionally putting something above God?
  • Where do I feel Him gently calling me to trust Him more?
  • What small change can I make this week to give Him more space?
  • When have I most felt close to Him — and how can I return to that?

🙏 A Prayer to Make God First Again

Lord, I want You to have first place in my heart. Not just in my words, but in my time, my choices, and my desires. Forgive me for the moments I’ve let other things crowd You out. Help me live a life that flows from love for You. Teach me to walk with You daily — not out of duty, but devotion. Be my first love again. Amen.

✨ Final Thoughts

Putting God first doesn’t mean you’ll never stumble or feel overwhelmed. It just means you’ve decided to keep returning to Him — again and again.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present with God, and letting Him lead you.

He’s not asking you to prove yourself.
He’s inviting you to walk with Him.
