In these opening chapters of Exodus, God’s plan to rescue His people begins to unfold. Despite Pharaoh’s harsh oppression, God raises up Moses, preserving his life and preparing him to deliver Israel from slavery. Through the burning bush, God reveals Himself as the eternal and faithful “I AM,” calling Moses to a task that seems impossible. Like Moses, we may struggle with doubt, but God equips us for the purposes He has planned. As we reflect on this passage, let’s remember that God’s calling always comes with His provision.
Overview of Exodus 1-4
- Exodus 1: The Israelites multiply in Egypt but are enslaved and oppressed by Pharaoh, who orders the killing of Hebrew baby boys.
- Exodus 2: Moses is born, saved from death, and raised in Pharaoh’s palace. As an adult, he flees to Midian after killing an Egyptian.
